Fortune Smiles on Tim Brown at Bowman Gray
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) It takes a combination of several factors to be competitive at Bowman Gray Stadium. You need driving talent and hard work in the garage – but you also need to have a little luck on your side.
And the way Tim Brown of Rural Hall is performing in 2012, he must have a four-leaf clover in his pocket.
Brown grabbed the checkered in the first race for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series on Friday, August 3, and then went on to grab a second-place finish in the second race. “What a season we’re having,” said Brown. “We’re just trying to be like a well-oiled machine.”
On the opposite end of the spectrum, points contenders Jason Myers of Walnut Cove and Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem couldn’t catch a break on Friday. Both were involved in a pileup during the second race, hurting their points totals.
“I hate that the guys behind me had such trouble, but I’ll take it,” said Tim Brown. “We’ve worked so hard, and we’ve had such a great year. It’s just awesome.”
Tim Brown adds another 19 points to his lead after Friday’s race, placing him 44 points ahead of Myers. Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg stayed out of the wreckage to move up to third in the points – 14 points behind Myers.
Friday’s victory was the eighth of the season for Tim Brown, breaking his personal record for most wins in a single year. But the #83 team is aiming for two more checkered flags in 2012.
“In the winter time, when we’re working on the car, we set stupid, astronomical goals to try to work for,” said Tim Brown. “Naturally, championship number nine was one. But I told them I wanted to win ten races this year – and I’ve already won eight. We’ve got a great shot of winning some more, so it’s doable.”
But the win record pales in comparison to Brown’s hopes for the championship. He currently has eight Modified titles, tying him with Ralph Brinkley for the most Modified championships in the 64-year history of Bowman Gray Stadium. If he were to win the title this season, he would shatter that record and would sit alone as a nine-time champ.
With just two scheduled weeks of racing left in the Stadium’s season, the tension grows with each passing lap. Jason Myers, Lee Jeffreys, and Jonathan Brown hope to claim their first title, with Tim Brown giving it everything he’s got to engrave his name in the record books.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, disaster struck for Derek Stoltz of Walkertown on Saturday. A collision relegated him to a 22nd place finish, hammering him in the points. Although Jeff Garrison of Arcadia had his share of bad luck on Saturday with a 14th place finish, Garrison gains 16 points on Stoltz – reducing Stoltz’s lead to only five points.
Points contender John Holleman of Winston-Salem finished second in the 20-lapper for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series, but points leader Billy Gregg of Lexington finished fifth to maintain a healthy lead.
In the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, A.J. Sanders of Mocksville grabbed the checkered. But Charlie Curry of Welcome finished second to maintain the points lead.
This Saturday is your last chance to see the racing action for just one dollar – it’s Whelen One Dollar Ladies’ Night. Women are admitted for just one buck to see twin 25s for the Modifieds, plus racing for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions. And the night ends with the always wild thrills of the 109 U-Pull-It Train Race.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
