Last-Lap Mayhem at Bowman Gray

(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) There’s never a moment at Bowman Gray Stadium when a driver can get comfortable. Every lap carries the potential for victory or the danger of defeat.
            Such was the case on Saturday for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series – when both races were decided by furious last-lap battles for the lead.
            Tim Brown of Rural Hall qualified on the pole for the first 25-lapper with Burt Myers of Walnut Cove starting to his outside. The two fought for the lead during the initial start. Myers looked strong on the outside, but Brown eventually prevailed on the inside groove.
            A stiff tap or two from Myers didn’t phase Brown, who held the lead for over 20 laps. But Brown’s skills were put to the test as he and Myers approached lapped traffic on the white flag lap.
            As they headed into turn three towards the checkered flag, Myers gave a strong shot to Brown, allowing Myers to slip inside. The two banged fenders, crashed against each other, and slid across the finish line in a photo finish.

            “I caught some lapped traffic, and as I was catching them I started slowing down because they were all over the race track - and I didn’t want to have to go to the outside and give him the inside,” said Brown about the white-flag battle. “There wasn’t any way I was going off the gas. We’ll wreck if that’s what they want to do but I was going for the win.”
            Myers was disappointed finishing second by only a few inches, but he knew he gave it everything he had. “I gave him a shot to get him out of shape, it gave me the bottom groove, and I took advantage of it,” said Myers. “We did a little beating and banging down the front stretch, and I guess he won the race.”
            Randy Butner of Pfafftown finished third.
            For the start of the second race, the “Madhouse Scramble” sent Chris Fleming of Mount Airy to the pole with Kevin Powell of Winston-Salem starting on the outside front row.
            A thunderous crash left Powell careening off the guard rail, letting Austin Pack of Walkertown move up to second place. Pack took his time stalking Fleming, until finally pouncing on the last lap to bump Fleming out of the way for the win.

            “There at the beginning, my car was a little tight,” said Pack. “I knew after a while I’d get it to where I wanted. I waited and waited to make a move - and finally I took it.”
            The victory makes Pack the 123rd winner of a featured event at Bowman Gray Stadium, adding him to the list of winners including Richard Petty, Junior Johnson, Curtis Turner, Ralph Earnhardt, Glen Wood, and many more.
            One driver on that list was particularly noteworthy for Pack – his father, Brian Pack, who died tragically in a non-racing motorcycle accident four years ago. “That was my main goal coming over here. I wanted to get in the record books just like my father,” said Pack.
            Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem finished in second, with Ronnie Clifton of Walkertown taking third.
            In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Bobby Reed of Clemmons claimed the checkered for the first 20-lapper. Michael Tilley of Winston-Salem and Derek Stoltz of Walkertown finished second and third.
            Rookie Noah Triplett of Tyro won the second Sportsman race after a heated encounter with Bryant Robertson of Lexington. Jeff Garrison of Arcadia came in second, and Taylor Branch of Lewisville claimed third.
            David Sumner of Trinity brought home the win in the 20-lap race for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series after battling with Billy Gregg of Lexington, who ended up finishing third. Johnny Arnder of Mount Airy finished second.
            In the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, Derek Taylor of Yadkinville notched his first win at the Stadium in the “A” race. Wesley Thompson of Winston-Salem won the “B” race.
