Points Ladders Shaken at Bowman Gray
Jonathan Brown drops; Myers clings to points lead.
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) The points battles continue to rage on at Bowman Gray Stadium, with the ladders being shaken up after Saturday’s action.
Tim Brown of Rural Hall turned the fastest time, placing him on the pole for the start of the first 25-lapper for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series. Although he was recovering from a five-week bout of pneumonia, Brown was still able to grab the lead and the checkered flag in dominant fashion.
Brown is striving for his ninth championship in 2012, an accomplishment that would shatter Ralph Brinkley’s long-held record for most Modified titles at the Stadium. “You’ve got to win as many as you can and finish in the top-five as much as possible,” said Brown. “It’s a tough deal this early in the season. It’s a long battle to be fought here.”
Burt Myers of Walnut Cove qualified in second and pressured Brown during the race. But Brown wouldn’t budge, relegating Myers to a second place finish. “Tim and I were pretty even,” said Myers. “I got a feeling that at the end of the year it’s going to come down to me racing that blue car again.”
But things can change in an instant at Bowman Gray Stadium. As the green flag fell in the second Modified race, Brian Loftin of Lexington and rookie Tommy Neal of Walkertown tangled for the lead. They collided and created a massive pileup in the blink of an eye.
Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem, who was tied for the points lead entering Saturday’s events, ran straight into the wreckage. His car was mangled before the first lap was over, dropping him down to fifth in the points.
Myers was also involved in the incident. “The second race was just wild,” said Myers. “I got stopped, and I got drilled from behind and shoved in the wreck. It knocked the right front tire off of it.”
“But when you grow up racing over here, you go through just about every scenario you can think of. So when I go down the backstretch and I’m yelling ‘right front,’ they’ve already got the stuff ready to fix it when I come in,” said Myers. “We salvaged a little bit. It could’ve been a lot worse.”
Myers finished 11th in the second race, keeping him in the points lead but causing him to lose ground. Younger brother Jason Myers of Walnut Cove stays even with Burt, maintaining his second place ranking in the points.
But Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg and Tim Brown were able to move up the ladder into third and fourth, narrowing the distance between them and the Myers brothers.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Jeff Garrison of Arcadia claimed the checkered in the second race – boosting him into the points lead. Bryant Robertson of Lexington falls from the top spot down to second.
The points ladder tightens in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series. Billy Gregg of Lexington stays up front, but Doug Wall of Pfafftown moves up to only four points behind him. Trinity resident David Sumner’s win on Saturday puts him in a strong third place ranking.
In the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, Charlie Curry of Welcome finished second – keeping him in the points lead. A.J. Sanders of Mocksville brought home a win, placing him second on the points ladder.
This Saturday is the biggest test yet for the competitors – it’s Double Points Night. Each race will award double the normal amount of points, so get ready for some fireworks.
The Sportsman cars will compete in the Whelen Sportsman 100 – the longest and most prestigious race of the season for the Sportsman Series. The Modifieds race in twin 25-lappers, with the Street Stock and Stadium Stock Divisions filling out the schedule.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, qualifying begins at 6:30, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
