(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) With the full moon hanging in the sky at Bowman Gray Stadium during last Saturday, it was a wild night of competition. Fenders were dented, tempers boiled, and the points races heated up.
Tim Brown of Rural Hall overtook Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg from the outside to grab the lead and take the win in the first 25-lapper for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series. Brown didn’t fare as well in the second race, though. “I think I got hit or hit somebody 150 times in 25 laps,” said Brown.
“But this is a way better start than we had last year for the season,” said Brown, who hopes that 2012 will be his record-breaking ninth championship. He is currently ranked third in the points standings.
Lee Jeffreys finished right behind Brown in the first race and battled his way from eleventh to fourth in the second race, earning more points than any other Modified competitor. He climbs from eight up to fifth in the points.
The top of the points ladder is turning into a case of sibling rivalry. Burt Myers of Walnut Cove silently made his way through the field on Saturday, finishing third and sixth to maintain his points lead. His younger brother, Jason Myers of Walnut Cove, moves up to second on the points ladder after a fifth and third place finish.
Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem performs strongly with his new team so far in 2012 – Brown is currently ranked fourth in the points.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Gary Ledbetter of Lexington wins the first 20-lapper and fights his way up to a seventh place finish in the second race. Ledbetter leads the way in the Sportsman rankings.
Derek Stoltz of Walkertown and Bryant Robertson of Lexington are close behind, sitting second and third on the points ladder.
John Holleman of Winston-Salem becomes the youngest points leader ever for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series. He finished second in Saturday’s 20-lapper. Billy Gregg of Winston-Salem took the checkered, ranking him in second - just two points under Holleman.
In the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, Michael Wells of Mocksville won a wild 15-lapper to grab the top spot on the points ladder. After a post-race temper flare-up with Wells, Jason Keaton of Mocksville was suspended for one week for laying hands on an official.
This Saturday night, the points battles crank up even more - it will be the Kevin Powell Motorsports 100. The Modifieds will have a full-field draw for position, and the infamous Double-File Restart Rule will be in effect. And don’t forget the always exciting racing for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, qualifying begins at 7:10, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
