Championships Decided This Weekend at Bowman Gray
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) It all comes down to this.
The race for the championships will be decided this weekend in the Carolina Farm Credit 150 Season Finale. Double the normal amount of points will be on the line, so competitors will be fighting down to the last lap.
Burt Myers of Walnut Cove has the points lead in the GMAC Insurance Modified Series. The Modifieds didn’t race on Saturday due to rain, so the good news for Myers was that his points lead stayed intact. The bad news was that Myers qualified on the pole and was itching to add another victory to his record in 2011 – a chance which was cancelled when the rain fell.
During last season, Myers entered the final event with the points lead and raced what he claimed was one of the toughest races of his career. He had to put his desire to take the checkered flag on the backburner in order to keep his focus on his points total and the championship.
But this season, Myers says the gloves are off. “I’m going to come over here and race to win,” said Myers. “We’ve got a little bit more cushion this year, so I’m going to try to win the race.”
Tim Brown of Rural Hall currently sits second in the points race. Brown would need to finish 19 positions ahead of Myers to claim the championship. That may sound like a hard task to pull off, but Myers may potentially have to deal with a few heated rivalries – which could possibly lead to a rear-of-the-field finish for him on Saturday.
The #83 team of Brown has stated again and again that they aren’t giving up on their drive to make 2011 their record-breaking ninth championship. And if 2011 isn’t the year, Brown has promised to return until he grabs another title and shatters Ralph Brinkley’s current record for most championships.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Robbie Brewer of Winston-Salem enters the final event with a 40-point lead over defending champion Kyle Edwards of King. Tommy Neal of Walkertown is just three points behind Edwards, with Taylor Branch of Lewisville a mere five points behind Edwards. With four points being awarded per finish position, this could potentially turn into a very close race.
John McNeal of Winston-Salem is on top of the points ladder for the Q104.1 Street Stock Series. He has a 72-point lead over Darren Cotner of King, with Matt Cotner of Rural Hall 18 points behind his brother, Darren.
The tightest points race is in the Freeman’s Auto Center Stadium Stock Series. Jimmy Absher of Rural Hall and Michael Wells of Mocksville tie for the points lead, with Chris Lawing of King only two points behind them. Jason Tutterow of Mocksville is only 18 points out of the lead, with Drew Moffitt of Winston-Salem a mere 22 points away from the lead.
This Saturday is the night you’ve been waiting for – the Carolina Farm Credit 150 Season Finale. The champions for all divisions will be crowned in one final battle.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, qualifying is at 7:10, and the first race is at 8:00. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
