Rivalries in Play at Bowman Gray
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) There are only two weeks left in the battle for the championship at Bowman Gray Stadium, and anything can still happen in the points races.
In the GMAC Insurance Modified Series, Tim Brown of Rural Hall takes the checkered on Saturday. Brown was racing side by side with race leader Jason Myers of Walnut Cove when Joseph “Bobo” Brown of Winston-Salem slowed and blocked Myers. That allowed the #83 of Brown to overtake Myers on the outside row to grab the lead and the win.
“Bobo kept Jason on the bottom, and I was on the outside going as hard as I could go. You can hate me for that, but Jason got robbed and I won the race,” said Tim Brown.
The incident between Jason Myers and Joseph Brown is just the tip of the iceberg – the two racing families have had more than a few run-ins recently. Jonathan Brown, brother of Joseph, has been on the giving and receiving ends of bumps for the lead as he fought with Burt Myers, Jason’s brother. Jason Myers and Joseph Brown had another heated dispute just one week before after hard racing.
This has left the Brown brothers with a bone to pick, and Joseph has declared his intentions to try and prevent Burt Myers from grabbing this year’s Modified title. Joseph threatened to ruin Burt Myers’s night on Saturday, but the #1 car of Burt Myers was able to dodge any problems.
Burt Myers finished third on Saturday, allowing Tim Brown to gain only two points on him. Summer rainstorms moved in to cause the cancellation of the second scheduled Modified 50-lapper, denying Brown a chance to make up any more points.
Jonathan Brown stays fourth in the points, although he loses some ground. Brown’s #53 car was damaged in a wreck, relegating him to a 14th place finish in the first race. The “Madhouse Scramble” had Jonathan starting third in the second race – a solid chance to even out his points losses – but the rainstorms soured that prospect.
Chris Fleming maintains his third place standing, with Jason Myers staying fifth and Joseph Brown sixth.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, defending champion Kyle Edwards of King finished 19th. Although Edwards keeps his second place ranking, the night puts a large dent in his point total. Tommy Neal of Walkertown was in the same boat: He finished sixteenth to stay third in the points but the gap separating him from the lead widens.
Robbie Brewer of Winston-Salem took advantage of the situation, claiming third and increasing his points lead. Taylor Branch of Lewisville finished fourth to move up and tie Tommy Neal for third in the points.
John McNeal of Winston-Salem continues to lead the way in the points battle for the Q104.1 Street Stock Series. Darren Cotner of King claimed the checkered on Saturday. Cotner stays second in the points and takes a slice out of McNeals’ points lead.
In the Freeman’s Auto Center Stadium Stock Series, the points ladders were shaken up on Saturday. Chuck Wall of Clemmons and Drew Moffitt of Winston-Salem were tied for the points lead entering last event. But both were involved in a collision, dropping them back in the rankings.
Jimmy Absher of Rural Hall claimed the checkered in last event, boosting him up to the points lead. Michael Wells of Winston-Salem finished third, rocketing him up to tie Absher for the top spot on the ladder.
This Saturday will be the Winston-Salem Journal $1 Ladies’ Night – the final chance of 2011 for women to be admitted for only one dollar. There will be racing for all four divisions and the final Demolition Derby of the season.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, qualifying is at 7:10, and the first race is at 8:00. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
