Points Battles Rage On at Bowman Gray
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) As Bowman Gray Stadium draws closer to crowning the 2011 champions, each race brings heightened tension and hotter tempers.
Burt Myers of Walnut Cove took the checkered on Saturday to extend his points lead in the GMAC Insurance Modified Series. “Ultimately, you always want to win the championship,” said Myers. “I’ve been blessed in my career to win four championships over here - and right now I’m just trying to enjoy my racing career.”
“We’re definitely going to celebrate this one,” said Myers about the win. “I saw that the 83 car [of Tim Brown] had problems, and that’s going to work out in our favor.”
Tim Brown of Rural Hall had an on-track dispute with Brian Loftin of Lexington. Not only did the interaction heat up their rivalry, but Brown was also forced to pit. He finished 18th, maintaining his second place standing in the points but doing major damage to his points totals.
Chris Fleming of Mount Airy finished sixth on Saturday to stay third in the points. Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem finished right behind Myers in second, keeping him fourth in the rankings.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Kyle Edwards of King claimed victory in the first 20-lapper. Unfortunately, he ran into trouble in the second race, taking him out of the points lead.
Robbie Brewer of Winston-Salem seized the moment, finishing third and fifth to move onto the top of the points ladder. Tommy Neal of Walkertown is currently ranked third, only eight points behind Brewer in the lead.
Points leader John McNeal of Winston-Salem finished eighth in the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series 20-lap race. Championship hopeful Darren Cotner of King was unable to capitalize on the situation, instead finishing 16th. Cotner keeps his second place ranking but loses ground to McNeal. Brian Wall of Winston-Salem finished fourth, moving him closer to passing Cotner in the points standings.
In the Freeman’s Auto Center Stadium Stock Series, Drew Moffitt drops out of the points lead after bad luck relegated him to a last place finish. Jason Tutterow of Mocksville won on Saturday, and Michael Wells of Mocksville finished right behind him in second. The strong performances move Wells into the points lead with Tutterow jumping up to a third place ranking.
The action will heat up again this Saturday – it will be Whelen Engineering Night with Modified twin 50s. There will also be racing for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions. The night will end with the season’s final 109 U-Pull-It Train Race, a wild race for teams of three cars chained together.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, qualifying is at 7:10, and the first race is at 8:00. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
