Myers Takes Fourth Win at Bowman Gray
On-track rivalries heat up.

(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) As a heat wave creates scorching temperatures across the South, the action was heating up on the track at Bowman Gray Stadium.
            Saturday’s Sheetz 100 for the GMAC Insurance Modified Series was primed and ready for fireworks. Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem turned in a strong qualifying lap and then drew the pole for his starting position.
Brown shot out into the lead, holding off Austin Pack of Walkertown and Dean Ward of Winston-Salem. Ward took advantage of the double-file restarts to challenge Brown from the outside, but the #53 of Brown held strong.
Points leader Burt Myers of Walnut Cove drew seventh as his starting spot. After turning the fastest qualifying lap of the entire season during time trials, Myers knew his car would be tough to beat. “The car was awesome tonight,” said Myers, who slowly made his way up through the field. “I just tried to bide my time.”
            Brown and Myers knew they would be each other’s toughest competition. Brown had the strategic task of defending his lead in the early race while still maintaining his tires to compete against Myers later in the race. “I felt like I saved my tires. I think we had Burt concerned just a little bit,” said Brown.
            After spending most of the race making his way steadily towards the front, Myers was in a position to challenge Brown for the lead during a double-file restart on lap 73. Brown was able to fend off Myers this time – and then again on another restart. But on the third try, Myers powered past Brown on the outside to claim the lead.
            Brown felt that Myers’s pass was the result of illegal car alterations. “Hands down: a straight-up car, not a cheated-up car - no one’s going to outrun the 53,” said Brown.

            Meanwhile, Myers takes his fourth win of the season. “You don’t realize how hard it is to win over here,” said Myers. “So to win four races over here and to be leading in the points, we’re blessed.”
            Brown finished second with Dean Ward taking third.
            While Myers was fighting for the lead, many people had their eyes on the back of the field where eight-time champion Tim Brown of Rural Hall tangled with points contender Brian Loftin of Lexington. The two had several run-ins during the race and have no love lost as a result of Saturday’s battles. “I would say it’s going to stick around for a while,” said Loftin about the rivalry.
            In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Kyle Edwards of King slips by Todd Gray of Lexington to take the lead and the win in the first 20-lapper.Michael Adams of Yadkinville finishes behind him in second. Derek Stoltz of Walkertown passes Taylor Branch of Lewisville to grab the checkered in the second race.
            Billy Gregg of Winston-Salem holds off Matt Cotner of Rural Hall to win the 20-lap race for the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series. The two had been involved in an on-track dispute two weeks ago which left both their cars damaged and Cotner suspended for a week.
            In the Freeman’s Auto Center Stadium Stock Series, Jason Tutterow of Advance and Andrew Sanders of Mocksville each won a 15-lapper.
