Good Luck for Jeffreys, Myers at Bowman Gray

(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) It seems that bad luck has followed Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg at every event this season at Bowman Gray Stadium. But on Saturday, it was the rest of the field that followed Jeffreys as he took the checkered flag.
            When points leader Burt Myers of Walnut Cove went out first for qualifying laps, he turned a disappointing 14.522, a time that ended up being 18th fastest out of 19 drivers. Points contenders Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem and Tim Brown of Rural Hall qualified 17th and 14th.
            Times gradually improved as the qualifying session went on until Lee Jeffreys laid down a 13.580 – the fastest lap of the night. And to make things even better, father Robert Jeffreys of Winston-Salem qualified in third. “The track was dirty at the start of qualifying,” said Lee Jeffreys. “We got a good lap and were able to get a good start.”
            Jeffreys led the first 25-lapper from start to finish in dominant fashion. He claimed the victory while Robert Jeffreys finished in third. “You get out front, and it seems to me that your car works better,” said Lee Jeffreys. “You can run your own line, you don’t have to worry about anyone else, and it just seems to work better for you.”
            Ronnie Clifton of Walkertown, Sportsman legend and rookie in the Modified Division, turned the second-fastest qualifying lap of the night. He went on to take second, his highest finish of the 2011 season.

            Defending Champ and current points leader Burt Myers was able to claw his way up to a 10th place finish. So when the O’Reilly Auto Parts “Madhouse Scramble” number was 10, Burt Myers started on the pole for the second race. Tim Brown would start second after finishing ninth in the first race.
            Myers grabbed the lead as he and Brown battled into turn one, but Brown began to immediately deliver some strong taps to the rear bumper of Myers. But the #1 car of Myers held on to take the win in the second race.
            “You don’t have to be the best. You just have to be good enough to put yourself in a place to take advantage of the good luck when it comes your turn - and that’s what we did tonight,” said Myers. “The car is awesome right now, you just have to have a little luck to go with it - and we were able to get some in the second race.”
            Tim Brown finished second, with Brian Loftin of Lexington taking third.
            Saturday was the annual 60-lapper for the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, and fans were reminded why Bowman Gray Stadium is nicknamed “The Madhouse.” The caution flag waved 12 times in a brutal contest that put competitors’ nerves to the test.
            Kenny Bost of Lexington started in the lead until a collision with Derek Stoltz of Walkertown took them both out of the race. Taylor Branch of Lewisville, Barry Edwards of Pinnacle, Kyle Edwards of King, and Luke Fleming of Mount Airy all had their turn at the head of the pack. But Gary Ledbetter of Lexington was there when the checkered flag waved.
            Mitch Gales of Thomasville claimed second place, while Barry Edwards finished third.
            Billy Gregg of Winston-Salem won the 20-lapper for the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series, which only ran 14 laps due to time limit expiration. John McNeal of Winston-Salem and Brian Wall of Winston-Salem finished in second and third.
            In the Freeman’s Auto Center Stadium Stock Series, Rob Young of Winston-Salem and Dale Barneycastle of Mocksville each claimed the checkered in a 15-lapper.
