Points Ladders Shaken Up at Bowman Gray
Bad luck for some means good luck for others.
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) The 100-lappers are infamous at Bowman Gray Stadium for putting competitors to the test. The field randomly draws for position, the double-file restart cone makes several appearances, and fireworks can be expected.
When the GMAC Insurance Modified Series raced in a 100-lapper on Saturday, Michael Clifton of Walnut Cove was the lucky competitor to draw the pole as his starting position. Clifton entered the event ranked third in the points and was surely hoping to take advantage of this opportunity to climb up the ladder even more.
Clifton bolted out into the lead at the start, but bad luck struck soon after. Dean Ward of Winston-Salem grabbed the lead away from Clifton on lap 26 – a move that Clifton feels Ward should have been penalized for. Then a few laps later, Clifton and Ward collided as they fought again for the lead. Clifton got the worst of it, spinning and falling back to the rear of the field. Clifton finished 13th, dropping him from third to sixth in the points.
Points contender Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem entered last event ranked second in the points. Battling his way up from an 18th place start, Brown made it into the top three and had his sights set on the win.
But Brown also ran into some misfortune. As he battled for second place with Danny Bohn of Huntersville, his right front wheel was damaged. Brown was forced to pit, giving him a 15th place finish. He maintains his second place standing in the points but loses some ground.
Burt Myers of Walnut Cove started 15th and finished in 4th, keeping him in the points lead and widening the gap separating him from Jonathan Brown.
Eight-time Champion Tim Brown of Rural Hall drew 22nd but charged through the field to finish 5th. He leaps up to third in the points. Tying him for the third is Jason Myers of Walnut Cove, who finished 7th on Saturday.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Tommy Neal of Walkertown drops out of the points lead. Neal was leading the first race until a flat tire caused him to spin, relegating him to a 22nd place finish.
Defending Champion Kyle Edwards of King benefits from Neal’s misfortune, moving up to claim the points lead. Bryant Robertson of Lexington drops from second in the points down to third.
John McNeal of Winston-Salem continues to lead the way in the points standings for the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series. Matt Cotner of Rural Hall remains in second, and brother Darren Cotner of King barely hangs onto third.
In the Freeman’s Auto Center Stadium Stock Series, Jason Tutterow of Advance and Michael Wells of Walkertown are still first and second in the points standings. Drew Moffitt of Winston-Salem moves up to third after taking the checkered.
This week will be Modified twin 25’s and a Sportsman 60-lapper at Bowman Gray Stadium. There will be racing for all four divisions and a jump by the Special Forces Parachute Team.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, qualifying is at 7:10, and the first race is at 8:00. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
