Pressley on Pole for Army Strong 150 at Bowman Gray
Robert Johnson qualifies third in his first ever NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race.
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC)\The drivers didn’t know what to expect last night at Bowman Gray Stadium. And they don’t know what to expect tonight – other than that the Army Strong 150 for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East is going to be a race you don’t want to miss.
The 150-lapper will be the first time that the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East has ever competed at Bowman Gray Stadium. None of the drivers have any experience driving around the track, and their teams have no experience on how to tweak their car setups.
During qualifying sessions last night, Coleman Pressley turned the fastest lap, placing him on the pole for the start of tonight’s Army Strong 150.
“When I hit my lap, I knew it was a solid lap. We didn’t get too loose, drove it in nice and easy, and cut the center well,” said Pressley, who’s looking forward to tonight’s race. “It’s probably one of the most fun tracks I’ve been on to race, so far. It’s one of those tracks you just have to muscle around.”
A track as tight as Bowman Gray Stadium rewards aggressive driving styles, but Pressley says he’ll feel right at home. “It definitely suits my characteristics,” said Pressley. “Getting into the corner, you’re going to have to force the issue a little more than you would at most tracks.”
Pressley’s teammate, Matt DiBenedetto, will start in second. And starting in third will be an unexpected wild card: Robert Johnson, the son of racing legend Junior Johnson, qualified third fastest. It was an impressive performance considering tonight will be Robert’s first ever race in the K&N Pro Series East.
“I didn’t think it was going to be that good when we went out,” said Robert Johnson. “The car came around the second lap, and it was a good run for us. I didn’t expect anything like that.”
“I’m going to try and play my cards right and stay in there until the end - and then go for it,” said Robert Johnson, who adds that his father has been giving him a few pointers. “I told him how I’d run it, and what he’s going to be putting up with. He’s gotta have a lot of patience and pick his spots to get by people,” said Hall of Famer Junior Johnson. “We don’t intend to stay in third place.”
The Army Strong 150 for the K&N Pro Series East starts at 8:00 tonight, followed by a 100-lapper for the GMAC Insurance Modified Series. There will also be a 109 U-Pull-It Chain Race – and it will be Two Dollar Ladies’ Night: Women get in to see the action for only two dollars!
In last night’s Webb Heating & A/ Co. Sportsman Series, Ryan Robertson of Winston-Salem took checkered in the first race, with Kyle Edwards of King claiming victory in the second Sportsman race.
Jerry Helms of Winston-Salem won the 20-lapper for the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series.
And in the Freeman’s Auto Center Stadium Stock Series, A.J. Sanders of Mocksville won the first race. Kenny Dixon of Pfafftown brought home victory in the second 15-lapper.
