Myers Wins Race, Brown Takes Championship at Bowman Gray
Clifton, Sumner, and Barneycastle also claim championships.
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) The 61st year of racing action at Bowman Gray Stadium came to a grand finale on Saturday night. With all the championships on the line, each and every lap was a nail-biter – with some drivers encountering bad luck at the worst possible time and other competitors ending their season on a high point.
In the Farm Bureau Insurance Modified Series, both Tim Brown of Cana, VA and Burt Myers of Walnut Cove were smiling after Saturday nights’ racing. Myers took checkered in the Carolina Farm Credit 150 after leading every lap in dominant fashion. Brown finished behind him – but claimed the Modified championship.
Myers qualified on the pole, narrowly beating Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg by a mere two-thousandths of a second. Jeffreys ended up starting outside of Myers in second.
“We had two goals coming in to tonight: to take the pole and win the race,” said Burt Myers. “You never want to count your chickens before they hatch. I had a really good car. I knew that Lee would run me hard, but he’d run me clean.”
“The only thing I was concerned about was that we were probably running a little faster pace at the beginning of the race than I wanted to run,” said Myers. “I wanted to make sure we had something left at the end. I hate to say that I doubted the car, but I was a little worried.”
All Myers’ fears were relieved as he entered the final parts of the race with enough tire life left to allow him to power ahead from the rest of the pack. He went on to claim his 7th victory of the season, giving him 39 career victories and moving him past the 38 win total of his father, racing legend Gary Myers.
At the end of the season, Myers had the fastest pole lap, the most poles, the most wins, and the most laps led. Myers didn’t take home the championship title, but he was unphased.
“We had a stellar season,” said Myers. “If you go get a banana split and they forget to put the cherry on top, you’re not going to complain about it. We had our big banana split. We got ice cream all over our face. We just didn’t get the cherry, and I can live with that.”
Brown took over second place as the green flag fell, but Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg muscled past Brown a few laps later. In the closing laps of the race, the ailing car of Jeffreys began to fall back – and Brown slipped by Jeffreys to reclaim the second place spot. Brown ended up finishing behind Myers, but he couldn’t be happier with a second place finish. He only needed to finish in the top 11 to take the championship, and Brown had his eye on the bigger picture.
The #83 team took their eighth Modified championship – tying Brown with the record for most Modified championships.
Many accuse Brown of being a “points racer” - an overly cautious driver who will settle for second instead of taking a risk for the win. But Brown rejects the notion. “I want to make this clear: I also have 50 race wins,” said Brown.
“You don’t pass a car on the outside with 4 laps to go when you’re point racing,” said Brown, referring to passing Lee Jeffreys. “This year, I was leading the points and pulled up beside Burt Myers on a Double-File Restart – because I want to win.”
“I race hard and I race smart, and I try to race for the win,” said Brown. “A lot of people call me a points-racer, and now they’re going to call me 8-time champion.”
After the dust settled, Myers was second in the points and Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem was third in the final points standings.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, the 40-lapper on Saturday was an absolute roller-coaster ride.
Gary Ledbetter of Lexington entered the night leading in the points. Ronnie Clifton of Walkertown was his chief points rival: Clifton needed to finish only three positions ahead of Ledbetter to pass him in the points. Ledbetter started in 9th with Clifton starting in 16th – and Ledbetter looked to be in a good position to cruise to his first championship at the Stadium.
Meanwhile, Tommy Neal of Walkertown was delivering some stout taps to the rear bumper of race leader Derek Stoltz of Walkertown. Slightly past the halfway point in the race, Neal gave a bump that sent Stoltz spinning. Heading straight into the spinning car of Stoltz was Ledbetter. The #70 of Ledbetter was forced to pit and end the race early, erasing his championship hopes.
Ronnie Clifton was also mixed up in the incident, heading off to the pits for a quick tire change which sent him to the rear of the pack.
Tommy Neal, who was fourth in the points entering the event, now was in a good position to take the Sportsman championship. Derek Stoltz, ranked third in the points entering the race, was also in a prime position to grab the title due to Clifton and Ledbetter’s bad luck.
Clifton only had a few laps to fight his way up to a 12th place finish in order to end the season with more points than Tommy Neal. Although he was involved in yet another wreck that made him lose position, Clifton battled forward again and again.
Neal took the checkered. Clifton finished the race in 10th place – making him the 2009 Champion. Clifton, normally the competitor to beat in the Sportsman Series, had not yet been in the points lead all season. But he was in the lead when it counted – after the last checkered flag was waved. Neal finished the season ranked second in the points standings.
In the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series, Matt Cotner of Rural Hall started close to the front, while points rivals Joseph “Bobo” Brown of Winston-Salem and David Sumner of Trinity started towards the rear. Cotner surely was hoping to claim his first title, but involvement in a wreck on the very first lap relegated him to a 21st place finish.
Joseph “Bobo” Brown had to finish three positions in front of Sumner to grab the championship. At various times during the race, Brown was ahead of Sumner by the crucial margin of three positions. But Sumner, also fighting for his first title, closed the gap during the final laps of the race – finishing only one position behind Brown and taking the championship.
Brown finished the season ranked second in the points standings. Jerry Helms of Winston-Salem claimed the checkered on Saturday – his first win ever at the Stadium. The victory was enough to move him into a third place points ranking.
Dale Barneycastle of Mocksville took the championship in the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series – his first title in the division. Glenn Hamilton of Winston-Salem won the 15-lap race on Saturday after points contender A.J. Sanders ran into mechanical issues that took him out of the race.
Jimmy Absher of Rural Hall ended up second in the points, with Sanders finishing third place in the final standings.
