Lucky Draw for Brown Strengthens Points Lead at Bowman Gray
Points Gap Widens in the Farm Bureau Insurance Modified Series.
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) Tim Brown of Cana, VA started off his 2009 season at Bowman Gray Stadium by winning the very first race, taking an early points lead in the Farm Bureau Insurance Modified Series.
That lead has been defended each and every race this season – and for many events, Brown has been able to extend his lead even further.
But despite his strong performances, there’s no denying that he’s received a little help from Lady Luck along the way. Such was the case in Saturday’s Tucson 100, where the starting lineup was determined by random draw.
Randy Butner of Pfafftown, who was second in the points entering the event, drew 12th as his starting spot. Burt Myers of Walnut Cove, the third place man on the points ladder, drew 17th.
Brown drew the pole.
He had his work cut out for him, however: Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem drew the outside front-row to start the race.
Jonathan provided challenge after challenge to Tim Brown – and Jonathan even managed to steal the lead away on one of the double-file restarts. But Tim Brown was able to take the lead back, racing on to take the checkered.
The win strengthens the points lead of Tim Brown, increasing the gap between first and second to an impressive 60 points. Jonathan Brown finished second, keeping him at fourth in the points and getting him closer to breaking into the top three.
Randy Butner started 12th and finished eighth, maintaining his second place spot on the points ladder. Burt Myers flew through the field: starting 17th and finishing in third. The effort keeps him third in the points and places him only two points away from passing Butner for second place.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Gary Ledbetter of Lexington finished fourth and then 19th, slipping a little in the points and reducing his points lead. Kenny Bost of Kernersville finished an impressive second and fifth in the two races. Bost earned more points than any other Sportsman competitor, keeping him in second in the points rankings and moving him closer to taking over the lead from Ledbetter. Barry Edwards of Pinnacle slips down to third in the standings after finishing 11th and fourth.
Joseph “Bobo” Brown of Winston-Salem took the checkered on Saturday in the 20-lapper for the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series. The win boosts Brown into third in the points. Finishing right behind Brown in second was points leader Matt Cotner of Rural Hall, who keeps the lead in the points standings for another week. David Sumner stays second in the points after finishing sixth.
In the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series, Dale Barneycastle of Mocksville finished in fourth on Saturday, moving him from second in the points up to the points lead. A.J. Sanders of Mocksville, who held the points lead entering the event, slips down to second in the points after finishing eighth on Saturday. Only two points separate Barneycastle from Sanders, so this battle is far from over.
This Saturday is Cheerwine Night at Bowman Gray Stadium. There will be a 60-lap Sportsman race with the infamous Double-File “Choice” Restart Rule in effect – and to honor our nation, the Special Forces Parachute Team will perform a jump. For a special deal, adults can get $2 off admission with a Savage Energy Drink Bottle Cap. And, of course, there will be racing for the Modifieds, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions. Gates open at 6:00 for practice, qualifying begins at 7:20, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night.
