Tim Brown Beats Jonathan Brown to Claim Checkered in Tucson 100 at Bowman Gray
Several cautions made Tim Brown work hard for the victory.

(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) A new driving suit, the sweltering summer heat, and the intense competition brought on by double-file restarts added up to an exhausting race for Tim Brown on Saturday at Bowman Gray Stadium.
            “This is the hardest fought win I’ve ever had at the Stadium,” said Brown, a resident of Cana, VA. “The new race suit I had on tonight was brand new. I don’t know if they seal that thing up or if you need to wash it – I was about to pass out. It was extremely hot. When I got out of the car, I was lightheaded.”
            But the new driving suit was the least of Brown’s problems.
            The seven-time champion drew the pole for his starting position, but next to him on the outside row was Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem, a young up-and-comer who has already won twice this season.
            As the green flag dropped, the two fought fiercely for the lead with Tim Brown narrowly claiming the top spot. But much to Tim Brown’s dismay, a caution on lap 4 gave Jonathan Brown another chance to challenge from the outside. The #83 car again barely slipped by Jonathan Brown to defend the lead.
            Then came a caution on lap 23, another on lap 29, another on lap 38 – each time with Jonathan giving Tim Brown a fight but still unable to steal the lead.
            But things changed when the caution came out on lap 64. This time, Jonathan slammed the gas and was able to beat Tim Brown into turn one. “I spun the tires,” said Tim Brown. “He was taking off better than me every time. That one time he got a good start and when I shifted it spun the tires real bad.”
            Jonathan Brown only had one thought on his mind: “When I pulled out in the lead, I was thinking ‘Please no caution, no caution,’” said Jonathan Brown.
            But Jonathan didn’t get his wish: just a few laps later, the yellow flag waved once again – giving Tim Brown the chance to take to the outside to attempt to reclaim the lead that was once his.
            Tim Brown was able to out-motor Jonathan on the outside and retake the top spot, leading the rest of the way to take the checkered.
            Jonathan Brown gave a few hard taps to the rear of Tim Brown, but in the end Jonathan finished in second – quite an accomplishment for the young driver. “I feel like when me and Tim got single file, we checked out from the third place man every time. That’s just a good feeling to be up there running in the straightaways with Tim,” said Jonathan Brown.
            Burt Myers of Walnut Cove fought his way up from a 17th-place start to finish in third. Ronnie Silk of Norwalk, CT finished fourth in his debut at the Stadium.
            In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Defending Champion Ronnie Clifton of Walkertown claimed the win in the first 20-lapper, with Scott Hall of Walkertown taking the checkered for the second race.
            Joseph “Bobo” Brown of Winston-Salem, brother of Jonathan Brown, brought home the victory in the 20-lap race for the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series on Saturday.
            In the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series, Rob Young of Winston-Salem and Darren Cotner of King each won a 15-lapper on Saturday.
