Brown Continues Points Domination at Bowman Gray
Consistent and smooth performance the key to Brown’s success.

(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) It was easy to walk away from the events on Saturday at Bowman Gray Stadium and ignore the blue #83 car of Tim Brown. That is, until you looked in the record book.
Then you’d see that the Cana, Va. resident has more Farm Bureau Insurance Modified Series championships than any other current competitor at the Stadium. You’d see that he is ranked fourth for most all-time career Modified victories at the Stadium – more than any other current competitor with the exception of Junior Miller. You’d see that he holds the fastest qualifying lap ever around the legendary quarter-mile.
And on Saturday, you’d see that Brown gained more points than any other competitor even though he wasn’t involved in any of the Victory Lane revelry or on-track rivalries. With a mild-mannered second-place and fourth-place finish, Brown extends his points lead in the Modified Series to an impressive 46-point lead in the points standings.
But challengers may be on their way. Randy Butner of Pfafftown finished fourth and third, keeping Butner second on the points ladder and limiting Brown’s points gain to only one point.
Former Champion Burt Myers of Walnut Cove has also declared his intentions to whittle down Brown’s points lead. Myers has had a rough start to the season, but things are starting to turn around for the #1 car.
Myers turned the fastest lap of the night during Saturday’s qualifying session, the first time in 2009 that Myers had done so. Performance in qualifying is something that Myers’ team has recognized as vitally important at the Stadium, and the team has made drastic changes to the setup for the #1 car in recent weeks in an effort to improve their qualifying times.
After claiming the pole, Myers went on to take the win in the first Modified 25-lapper. Unfortunately, Myers ran into some trouble in the second race when race traffic became a little too crowded. Myers hit the guard rail and fell to the rear of the field. He still managed a seventh place finish, moving him to third in the points – but the incident cost him precious points in his race for the championship.
Jason Myers of Walnut Cove, the younger of Myers brothers, had his fair share of bad luck on Saturday. A run-in with Junior Miller left Myers spinning out of control in the first race, and a collision in the second race left Myers running into the guard rail right beside his brother. Myers racked up two 16th-place finishes, dropping him from third in the points down to sixth.
Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem, the winner of the second Modified race, moves up to fourth in the points to tie Michael Clifton of Walkertown.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Kenny Bost of Kernersville and Gary Ledbetter of Lexington each claimed the checkered on Saturday. Ledbetter remains the points leader with Bost still second in the points. Barry Edwards of Pinnacle remains third.
Matt Cotner of Rural Hall retains the points lead in the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series. Cotner finished the race in second but was awarded the victory after first-place finisher Joseph “Bobo” Brown of Winston-Salem was found to have an illegally large motor in post-race technical inspection.
The finding led to Brown’s disqualification, dropping him from second in the points to fifth in the points standings. Had he raced with a legal motor, he would currently be only 10 points behind Cotner.
Brown’s plummet in the points allowed David Sumner of Trinity to climb up to second in the points. Richard Reeves of Cooleemee flies from sixth in the points up to the third spot on the points ladder.
In the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series, Dale Barneycastle of Mocksville took the checkered in Saturday’s Craftsman Stadium Stock 50. Barneycastle maintains the second place spot in the points standings, while A.J. Sanders of Mocksville manages to stay on top. But with Sanders finishing fifth on Saturday, Barneycastle reduces Sanders’ points lead to a mere six points.
This Saturday is the Tucson 100 One Dollar Ladies Night, where all female fans are admitted for only one buck to see the racing action. The Tucson 100 for the Modifieds will be on the schedule – with a full-field draw for position and the infamous Double File “Choice” Restart Rule in effect. Also on the agenda will be racing for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions. And the night will end with another exciting 109 U-Pull-It Demolition Derby. Gates open at 6:00 for practice, qualifying begins at 7:20, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night.
