Wild Night at Bowman Gray Shakes Up Points Ladder
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) Race fans leaving Bowman Gray Stadium after last Saturday’s Double Points Night had one word on their minds: “Wow.”
In the Farm Bureau Insurance Modified Series, former Modified Champion Junior Miller of Danbury bumped rival Jason Myers of Walnut Cove out of the way to take the lead. The “King of the Modifieds” then went on to take the checkered flag for the first 25-lapper. Miller finished 6th in the second 25-lap race, moving him up to seventh in the points.
Burt Myers of Walnut Cove finished eighth in the first race and then fought his way up to the front to lead the first race. After a run-in with Winston-Salem resident Brad Robbins, who felt that Myers spun him out to take the lead, Myers was taken out of the lead and finished 10th in the second race. The incident dropped Myers from second in the points down to fourth.
Jason Myers ended up finishing seventh and then fourth, moving him up past his older brother – to third in the points. Randy Butner of Pfafftown finished fifth and seventh, boosting him up to second in the points rankings.
Michael Clifton of Walkertown earned more points than any other Modified competitor, finishing fourth and third – and moving up to tie Burt Myers for fourth in the points.
Sailing ahead of the pack is Tim Brown of Cana, Va. Brown smoothly finished in third and fifth to retain his points lead.
Saturday was the MESCO Building Solutions Sportsman 100, the longest and most prestigious race for the Sportsman Series. Kenny Bost of Kernersville was able to take the checkered, jumping from fifth in the points up to second.
Gary Ledbetter of Lexington finished right behind Bost in second, allowing Ledbetter to reclaim the top spot on the points ladder. Points contender Barry Edwards of Pinnacle finished in eighth, dropping him from the points lead down to third in the rankings.
Tommy Neal of Walkertown took third on Saturday, bringing him from ninth in the points up to fourth. Derek Stoltz of Walkertown jumps up an impressive 8 spots: after finishing fourth, Stoltz flies from 13th up to fifth in the points.
In the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series, Doug Wall of Pfafftown had a bout of bad luck at the worst possible time. Entering Saturday, Wall was leading the points with a healthy margin. But in Saturday’s 20-lapper with double points, Wall was involved in a collision and finished in 21st. The hit plummets him out of the points lead down to fourth.
Matt Cotner of Rural Hall took advantage of the opportunity, finishing fifth and moving into the points lead. Joseph “Bobo” Brown of Winston-Salem takes third and moves up to second in the points.
David Sumner of Trinity is now third in the points after finishing in second on Saturday. Johnny Arnder of Mount Airy drops down to fourth in the points after finishing 10th.
A.J. Sanders continues his unbelievable streak of strong finishes in the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series, taking second on Saturday and keeping him in the points lead. Sanders has 296 points out of a possible 300.
But close on his trail is Dale Barneycastle of Mocksville, who won on Saturday and clinches second place in the points. Kenny Dixon of Pfafftown slips back to third in the points after taking fifth. Jimmy Absher of Rural Hall ties Dixon for third after finishing in fifth.
This Saturday is the Craftsman Stadium Stock 50, the longest race of the year for the Stadium Stock Division. There will also be twin 25-lap races for the Modifieds, twin 20-lappers for the Sportsman cars, and racing for the Street Stock Division as well. Gates open at 6:00 for practice, qualifying for the Stadium Stock cars begins at 6:00, Modified Qualifying begins at 7:20, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night.
