Points Battles Rage On at Bowman Gray
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) In his quest for a fourth championship in the Farm Bureau Insurance Modified Series, Burt Myers had some good news on Saturday and some bad news.
The good news for the Walnut Cove resident is that his victory in the USG Modified 50 narrowed the points gap between him and Defending Champion Tim Brown of Cana, Va. The bad news is that, although Burt Myers won, Tim Brown finished in second – keeping the points gain for Myers to a minimum.
Brown decided to play it safe during the second of two double-file restarts, choosing the inside lane instead of taking a risk on the outside lane. The outside lane would have put Brown right on the outside front row beside Myers, giving Brown a shot at stealing the lead away from Myers. But Brown instead opted for the sure thing of a second place finish.
Myers’ victory moves him from eighth up to fifth in the points - 38 points behind Brown. Alfred Hill of Jonesville stays second in the points rankings with a ninth place finish. Randy Butner of Pfafftown is third in the points – only one point under Hill. Only one point under Butner is Jason Myers of Walnut Cove in fourth.
Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem entered last Saturday tied for second in the points. But involvement in a wreck gave Brown a 16th place finish, dropping him down to sixth in the points.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, it appeared to be a two-person points race entering Saturday. Gary Ledbetter of Lexington was in the points lead with Barry Edwards of Pinnacle in second. Only two points separated the two competitors – but there was a considerable 21 points gap between them and the rest of the field.
But that gap narrowed considerably on Saturday: Ledbetter finished 13th and 15th, and Edwards finished 18th and 13th. Keith McMichael of Belews Creek was able to take 7th and 5th on Saturday, keeping him in third on the points ladder and reducing the points gap separating him and Edwards to a mere four points.
Taylor Branch of Lewisville moved up to fourth in the points by taking a 4th place and 9th place finish. The 9th place and 4th place finish of Michael Adams of Yadkinville bumps him up to fifth in the points rankings.
The #68 car of Robbie Brewer of Winston-Salem was unable to start the race on Saturday due to mechanical issues. Brewer hopped into another ride, although the car change forced him to start in the rear. Brewer finished 19th and 16th, dropping him from third in the points down to ninth.
In addition to a Modified 50-lapper, Saturday was also the USG Street Stock 50, the longest and most prestigious race of the season for the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series. Doug Wall of Pfafftown took the checkered, extending his points lead. Matt Cotner of Rural Hall moved into second with his sixth place finish.
Joseph “Bobo” Brown of Winston-Salem gained ground on Saturday after one of the wildest white flag laps in Street Stock history. Brown was sideways down the backstretch of the final lap - but managed to keep his momentum, point the car in the right direction, and pull off a second place finish. The accomplishment boosts him from sixth in the points up to third.
In the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series, A.J. Sanders of Mocksville continues his near flawless performance. Out of four races in 2009, Sanders has three wins and one second place finish – giving him 198 points earned out of a possible 200. Needless to say, he maintains his points lead.
Dale Barneycastle of Mocksville finishes third, Jimmy Absher of Rural Hall finishes second, and Kenny Dixon of Pfafftown finishes in sixth – placing all three drivers in a three-way tie for second in the points.
This Saturday night is the Whelen 100 One Dollar Ladies’ Night presented by 94.5 La Preciosa. All females get in for only one dollar, and the racing schedule will include the Whelen 100 for the Modifieds. The 100-lapper is the second Modified race of the season to have starting lineup determined by random draw, so prepare to see the fastest cars fight their way to the front. And the infamous Double-File “Choice” Restart Rule will be in effect. In addition there will be racing for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions.
